Give £20 and Help Us Have Our Day in Court

Gartsherrie - The Story So Far

Last October, North Lanarkshire Council decided that it was going to shut Gartsherrie Primary and nursery. The reasons given were financial; North Lanarkshire said that it needed to save money and that Gartsherrie was under-occupied. This closure, along with other school closures, would save the council £460 000.

We see this as a totally illogical move. Gartsherrie has a good reputation, has 80% occupancy and people travel to go there. In addition to that, the council has plans to build some 4000 houses in Glenboig. Those people will need schools for their children to go to. How can this closure be justified?

Since October, we have campaigned against the closure. We have been on marches, held public meetings, and have fundraised to keep our campaign going. In March, the council voted to shut Gartsherrie at the end of June. We applied to the court for an interim interdict, but it wasn't granted. We can appeal, but we need £20 000 to cover expenses and we need to raise that amount in the next couple of weeks.

A Thousand Strong

Is £20 000 a lot of money? Yes, of course it is. But divide it by a thousand and that becomes £20. Would you give £20 to see the council held to account? Yes, of course you would. If we find a thousand people who give us £20 each can we do this? Yes. £20 x 1000 is £20 000. That's all that needs to be done.

Take 126 people, the roll of Gartsherrie. Each puts £20 in the pot. Each person contacts five relatives/friends/businesses/clubs and each of them puts in £20. We will have our £20 000.

How You Can Donate

Very shortly, we will put a Paypal 'Donate' button on this website. This is a safe and easy way to give money to the campaign and will enable us to collect the donations quickly. In the meantime we can be contacted at; savegartsherrieprimary@gmail.com

Why Should We Keep Going?

This has been a tough campaign. We might win. We might lose. But we owe it to ourselves and to all who have helped us, to take this to its conclusion. And our actions now, will help other schools who may be unfortunate enough to find themselves in our position in the future. For their sakes and ours, we need to hold the council to account for the appalling way in which it has conducted itself over this issue.
